Montreal hosts one of the largest and most renowned jazz festivals in the world. The 2011 Montreal Jazz Festival will run this year, June 25-July 4. The festival will feature artists from around the world, including Diana Krall, Kenny Garrett, k.d. lang, Joshua Redman, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Esperanza Spaulding, Hugh Masekela, Misteur Valaire, Wanda Jackson, Dave Brubeck, Peter Frampton, Oliver Jones, Ranee Lee, The Roots, Tony Bennett, Nikki Yanofsky, John Legend, Hilary Kole, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, Marianne Faithfull, Brad Mehldau, Bootsy Collins, Erik Truffaz, and Milton Nascimento. Amazingly, that’s just a small sample of the artists scheduled to appear in the over 800 concerts at this year’s 32nd edition festival. In addition to all the wonderful indoor concerts, the festival is noted for the free outdoor concerts that run from noon to midnight each day during the festival. This year’s opening free concert will open the festival on Saturday, June 25 featuring singer Ben L’Oncle Soul, and the B-52s will perform in the closing concert on Monday, July 4.
This year a highlight of the festival will certainly be the celebration of George Wein’s 85th birthday. Wein is the founder of the Newport Jazz Festival is considered the “father” of all jazz festivals. He will be performing with the Newport All Stars.
As is typical, the festival closes down a large portion of Montreal’s downtown and each year they say 2.5 million people come to enjoy the festival each year.
