One of the most spectacular summer events anywhere in the world is the celebration of the White Nights in St. Petersburg, Russia, the country’s cultural and artistic center. While the White Nights are celebrated throughout Russia, there is no other city quite as stunning as St. Petersburg for the celebration. The city, considered a grand city of the czars, celebrates the 3 months of White Nights, like none other. The White Nights are 80 plus nights of spectacular celebration between May and the end of July, when the city comes out of the many winter months of dark and cold, and welcomes summer and daylight with several months of summer celebrations. Residents of St. Petersburg have been celebrating summer since the early 18th century when Peter the Great founded the city, and named it after St. Peter.  However, the celebrations have never been as fabulous as the last decade as Russia’s healthy and even booming economy has poured money into St. Petersburg. Money has been spent on new restaurants, bars, and luxury hotels – making St. Petersburg an international destination for summer vacations and celebrations. There are celebrations of all kinds throughout St. Petersburg, from clubs to festivals, for young and old alike.

The Stars of the White Nights 2011, the International Ballet and Opera Festival is held this year through July 24 and features a wide variety of musical events that are all open to the public.  Many are held at the Mariinsky Ballet and Opera Theater.  However, there are ballets, operas, and concerts all over the city.
