Summer is an abundant time for food and festivals causing foodies everywhere to rejoice in the unlimited options available. For foodies with a preference for surf rather than turf, there’s the 16th annual Prince Edward Island International Shellfish Festival. The festival takes place from Sept. 15 -18 on the Historic Charlottetown Waterfront and offers up shucked, fried, steamed and sautéed goodness.
The PEI Shellfish Festival began in 1996 as a one-day event to celebrate PEI’s shellfish industry. It has evolved into a four-day event that draws tens of thousands of people to take in shellfish, shellfish and more shellfish. Montreal hosts one of the largest and most renowned jazz festivals in the world. The 2011 Montreal Jazz Festival will run this year, June 25-July 4. This year a highlight of the festival will certainly be the celebration of George Wein’s 85th birthday. Wein is the founder of the Newport Jazz Festival is considered the “father” of all jazz festivals. He will be performing with the Newport All Stars.
As is typical, the festival closes down a large portion of Montreal’s downtown and each year they say 2.5 million people come to enjoy the festival each year.
The French Open: The Most Prestigious Event in Tennis
You can still jet off to Paris for the final week of exciting Tennis at this year’s French Open held at Roland Garros. Today, CNN reported that number one in the world Rafael Nadal fought hard to reach the third round of the tournament after a difficult and exciting bout against Pablo Andujar. The 24-year old is hoping for his 6th French Open title and will now play against Croatian, Antonio Veic in the next round. The new female star, Caroline Garcia the 17 year old unknown, came close to beating one of the greatest stars in recent years, but lost to Russian Maria Sharapova.
Every year for two weeks at the end of May and the beginning of June, The French Open takes place in Paris, France. The legendary tennis tournament is held at Stade Roland Garros, a top clay court with the French Open the only tournament still held on a clay court. This prestigious tennis event has the largest broadcasting audience of all tennis events. The reigning singles champions from the 2010 French Open are Rafael Nadal (men) and Francesca Schiavone (women).

Teterboro is considered a “reliever” airport because it helps smaller aircraft from getting congested at the Port Authority’s commercial airports. The airport’s focus is on removing the smaller and slower aircraft from the regional air traffic that would cause major congestion at the Port Authority’s commercial airports. The airport is 827 acres, with 90 acres designated for aircraft hangars, maintenance and other offices, and 408 acres are for aeronautical use. Over 300 acres at Teterboro remains undeveloped. The control tower at Teterboro was constructed at the airport by the FAA and went into operation on October 29, 1975.
Teterboro Airport has a long history as it was opened back in 1919 and the land was purchased by Walter C. Teter in 1917.
During World War I, North American Aviation operated a manufacturing plant on the site. After the war, the airport served as a base of operations for Anthony Fokker, the Dutch aircraft designer and builder. During World War II, the Army and Air Force took over operation of the airport.
The Port Authority purchased the airport in 1949 and leased it to Pan Am World Airways in 1970 and then its successor, Johnson Controls, for a term for 30 years. In 2000, the Port Authority resumed full responsibility of operations and since 1970 has invested $174 million to upgrade the airport’s facilities and open new areas of service to the aviation community.
Today, Teterboro Airport continues to play a vital role in the aviation interests of the region.
